Having PANS and PANDAS is not just physically demanding, it can be emotionally and mentally straining as well, both for the kids who have it and their loved ones. This article provides some brief insights into what it’s like to deal with this disease.

PANDAS/PANS inherently comes with a lot of adverse mental health effects. Some symptoms of the disorder itself include depression, anxiety, and OCD. These symptoms, while being tied to PANDAS/PANS can often be lifelong. Along with this, you shouldn’t underestimate the negative effects of experiencing PANDAS/PANS on the children and their families. Oftentimes depression and anxiety can appear even after PANDAS/PANS is no longer present in a child due to the mental weight of dealing with the illness. Along with this, caregivers are also put under a lot of stress, at no fault of the child with the disease. This can have adverse impacts on the caregivers that are sometimes lifelong. Other family members, even ones not in a caretaking position, are often affected by the emotional weight of watching their loved one suffer.
